Ethernet is a type of network. Other types of networks are Token Ring and FDDI. Fiber is the media over which the network travels. Other types of media are RG6(coax) and cat 5, 5e, 6, 7 etc. cables. Those cat5 cables are what people frequently(but incorrectly) call ethernet cables. Sometimes distance is a factor in choosing fiber over cat5, but also data capacity, availability of space in the conduit, and how much EMI is in the area all go into deciding what type of cabling should be used.   Carl_Spackler 32 months ago

I personally do not know of any where fiber was chosen over STP cat5e, and I think you may have a hard time finding any where distance or bandwidth were not the overwhelming factor(s). Factoring in termination(and skill level required), transceivers(or fiber based port switches) and required data speeds, the cost is still higher per foot.   Carl_Spackler 32 months ago

ethernet is cheaper(parts) than fiber optics...basically they are both used for voice, data, and video . Now where it makes difference is the company size, usage, wireless accesspoints, what have you and volumne of usage, what kind of network your company needs what circuit provider etc. If a company went with fiber its because of the distance(information) that fiber optic can travel from the colocation versus ethernet which can travel 330 feet before quality is compromised.   besnuff 32 months ago

I was looking for any existing firber optic networks examples in any manufacturing industry. Any use of fiber optic media for any network protocal in any manufacturing network. Like one example I recieved already was a fiber optic network between two manufacturing buildings in florida, where lightning was a big problem. The replyer stated the reason they chose fiber optic too, because it is not effected by lighting. so that was a great example becuase I learn another reason fiber optic may be chosen as the network media, and a real world situation where it is currently being applied.   IndustrialTraining 32 months ago

My apologies for stating the obvious...and it seems you may need to tour a facility that matches your criteria. I hope you find a person here that has experience in IT informations for manufacturing. We deal with network operations centers and campuses for hospitals and data centers to name a few, and any pulled fiber or laying fiber is done by a contractor.
