Guidance For Trout Fishing Near Colorado Springs?

Postby Hamlett » Sun Jan 05, 2014 8:57 am

Okay, I want some easy fishing info. I've some relatives in Colorado Springs that I am prone to pay a visit to come july 1st and believe that carrying out a small bit of fishing could be enjoyable. Problems is, I know virtually nothing about it.What is the greatest season?Any especially very good spots about Colorado Springs?May possibly putting any old appeal attached with your straightforward rod and reel do or does one definitely demand "fly fishing" classes? Are instructions nicely worth it(the fees I've seen are bordering on the ridiculous), or are there a affordable quantity of great spots accessible to absolutely everyone?

Advice For Trout Fishing Near Colorado Springs?

There is plenty of great fishing, it's according to how far you want to drive and what you want to fish for Directly south and west of Colorado Springs are some great places to fish: I?d expecially recommend five.  There are minimal entrance fees for all of these recreational areas(typically $7 or less per day). Eleven Mile Reservoir Spinney Mountain Reservoir Antero Reservoir The South Platte below Spinney Mountain Reservoir Pueblo Reservoir Spinney Mountain Reservoir is about an hour west of Colorado Springs near the town of Hartsel.  It used to be the premier big trout fishery in Colorado, until it got overrun by Northern Pike.  The pike are now under control, so you can catch big trout and big pike there.  It?s flies and lures only, with a slot limit on trout(you can keep one over 20", all under 20" have to be released), no limit on pike.  It?s a big shallow windy bowl of a lake, and it fishes best in spring and fall.  You can easily fish it from shore, and spinning gear is probably a little better than fly gear. Antero Reservoir is within half an hour of Spinney Mountain, as is Eleven Mile.  It?s the hot reservoir in the state right now, since it only reopened for fishing last year after being closed for dam repair and restocking.  It?s another shallow bowl, but not as windy as Spinney, and it too fishes well from shore with spinning gear.  Some absolutely huge trout have been taken out of there.  Again, it fishes best in the spring and fall. Eleven Mile Reservoir is in the same area.  It?s a deep lake, unlike the other two.  It really fishes best from a boat.  It also has big trout and pike.  It fishes well all year, but it?s my least favorite of these. It has a lot of non fishing activity like sailing  and powerboating on it.  The South Platte River below Spinney Mountain is designated gold medal water, and it?s a classic Colorado trout stream.  It?s catch and release only, and flies work best.  This is tough but rewarding fishing all year round, if you?re hardy enough.  The trout here are not as big as the ones in the reservoir, but they?re smarter.  This is fly fishing for experts only.  Pueblo Reservoir is the premier warm/cool water fishery in the state(the others are all considered cold water fisheries).  It?s about an hour and a half south of Colorado Springs.  It has the best fishing for smallmouth bass, walleyes and really big wipers.  It gets really hot in the summertime and the fish go deep, but it?s great in summer and fall.  You can fish it from shore. I?ve never used a guide, but I live here.  I know that for some rivers they?d be worth it if you can find a good one. I bet everyone you ask will tell you the best Colorado Springs fly fishing is on the South Platte River. Check out Cheesman Canyon or the Dream Stream sections.
