How do I make Paint my default picture editor in WINDOWS?

Postby gilleabart » Tue Jun 19, 2012 7:53 pm

Up until I installed a new Windows XP, whenever I opened a jpeg file it would open in the Windows Picture and Fax viewer and when I clicked the Edit button second from right it would open in Paint. Now for some reason the default is the Microsoft Office program. I managed to reassign the first function with the ALWAYS OPEN WITH option in properties, changing it to the Windows Picture and Fax viewer; but I'm having trouble changing the default of the edit button once I'm in the Windows Picture and Fax viewer program. So my question is how do I change the Edit Picture function so that it opens in Paint rather than the Windows Office program? Thanks.

right click an image and go to "open with" then go to "choose default program" then choose paint and make sure you tick the box that says "always use the selected program to open this kind of file"

....This setting is so you don't have to manually change each file individually.

1) Opening Explorer " My Documents" or (right-click on Start button and select Explore)
2) On click Tools and then select Folder Options
3) In the Folder Options Window, select the File Types Tab. This Displays the list of known file extensions and the current associated applications.
4) Scroll the list to the desired extension, for example BMP, and click to select.
5) Click the Change button in the Details section, and in the Open With window select Paint. If Paint is not listed you can click the Browse button to open a File window and locate the Paint program (%SystemRoot%\System32\mspaint.exe on my system)
6) Repeat (4) and (5) for each image extension you want Paint to handle. Note that Paint can only read BMP, JPEG, GIF, TIFF, PNG and ICO files. Any other image files will require a different application.
