How do people who reject the big bang explain redshift and CMB radiation?

Postby berwin » Sat Dec 24, 2011 5:52 pm

Posted a few minutes ago:

"Why do people think that the big bang theory exist? It's a theory but everybody seems to think that its a fact."

The big bang is supported by a great deal of evidence:

* Einstein's general theory of relativity implies that the universe cannot be static; it must be either expanding or contracting.

* The more distant a galaxy is, the faster it is receding from us (the Hubble law). This indicates that the universe is expanding. An expanding universe implies that the universe was small and compact in the distant past.

* The big bang model predicts that cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation should appear in all directions, with a blackbody spectrum and temperature about 3 degrees K. We observe an exact blackbody spectrum with a temperature of 2.73 degrees K.

* The CMB is even to about one part in 100,000. There should be a slight unevenness to account for the uneven distribution of matter in the universe today. Such unevenness is observed, and at a predicted amount.

* The big bang predicts the observed abundances of primordial hydrogen, deuterium, helium, and lithium. No other models have been able to do so.

* The big bang predicts that the universe changes through time. Because the speed of light is finite, looking at large distances allows us to look into the past. We see, among other changes, that quasars were more common and stars were bluer when the universe was younger.

Note that most of these points are not simply observations that fit with the theory; the big bang theory predicted them.

If you reject the big bang, how do you explain all the evidence for it?

Note: Before posting an answer, please make sure it provides an alternate explanation for redshift and/or CMB radiation.

How do people who reject the big bang explain redshift and CMB radiation?

@Brennan S A scientific theory is a model created from evidence scientists have found that supports their conclusion, therefore making it a legitimate and real conclusion. Learn the proper definition of a scientific theory.

@Brennan S You confuse the scientific definition of theory with the colloquial one. Educate yourself.

The ironic thing is what the fundies don't realize is that the Big Bang was proposed by a Christian

In human psychology you learn people pay less attention to information that may be more credible that they disagree with as opposed to things that they agree with, but may be from a less trustworthy source. What can I say, it's how their brains evolved.

@Brennan Are germs not real? Because Germ theory is "just a theory."
Are cells not real? Because Cell theory is "just a theory."
Is gravity not real? Because general relativity is "just a theory."
Are atoms not real? Because Atomic theory is "just a theory."

You clearly don't know what a "theory" means in science.

A scientific theory is an explanation of the patterns we see in related data and observations. If germs, cells, gravity and atoms were not data driven, observable facts, there would be no theory about them! The fact that gravity exists is what allows us to have a theory related to it.

Big bang cosmology is no different. I'm sorry your science classes failed to teach you this very basic concept.

I love it when morons like Brennan and Briana demonstrate their ignorance for all the world to see.

They will never accept that fact no matter what, it seems religion is hardwired into their brain. For them the only logical yes logical answer is "God did it".

Just like I said before. If it was real then it wouldn't be called a theory.

Definition of theory: a proposed explanation whose status is still conjectural and subject to experimentation, in contrast to well-established propositions that are regarded as reporting matters of actual fact. Synonyms: idea, notion hypothesis, postulate. So in other words its a fking educated guess!!! is all it is.
