Why do you need to explain? I would just continue to politely decline without going into detail. That will prevent family members from passing on your comments and possibly embellishing them(like grade schoolers playing "telephone"). And in the future if you decide to get together will all your family again, there will be no hard feelings or eating crow necessary.
