Postby sceley » Mon Apr 04, 2011 4:10 am

i am under 18 and i live in nj. i get 30 minutes but i heard if you work over 8 hrs you are supposed to get an hour. i don't get any other break besides lunch. also is it true that since i am under 18 that i am not supposed to work more than 8 hrs a day according to the child labor laws?

Because of your age you fall under the child labor law of NJ. Each state regulates their own labor laws.

You must be given a 30 minute meal break after five consecutive hours of work.

You can not work more than 8 hours per day
You can only work certain hours.

Minors Age 16 and 17 - During school weeks:

* No more than 40 hours per week
* No more than 8 hours per day
* No more than 6 consecutive days in a pay week
* Not before 6 am or after 11 pm
* Not before 6 am or after 12 midnight on Fridays and Saturdays or days not followed by a school day

Minors Age 16 and 17 - Non-school weeks:

* No more than 40 hours per week
* No more than 8 hours per day
* No more than 6 consecutive days in a pay week
* Not before 6 am or after 11 pm
* Not before 6 am or after 3 am in restaurant and seasonal amusements and with written permission from a parent

How long should my lunch break be if i work 9 hours?

I thought if that was the case you would be allowed one 10 minute break in the morning and another 10 minute break in the evening. Other than that, without the breaks, I really thought it was or should be an hour lunch. As for the age thing. Not sure about the hours but I thought a person that age just couldn't work past 9pm at night.
