Having had the benefit of living and traveling abroad in four continents, I would have to say the USA is "freer" than most. I once applied for work in Germany and the rules and prohibitions I faced were incredible!
Freedom in the USA means being able to pack up and move to another state if one wishes. Or to change jobs. Or to attend college (or not).
In the USA, anyone is free to succeed. Of course, this means that anyone is free to fail, also.
Living in society (ANY society) requires a "social contract." What some people refer to as absolute freedom is in reality anarchy. Perhaps the Libertarians have the closest view of "freedom" from a societal point of view: Let me do what I want with as little government interference, as long as I do not harm or intrude on others.
I've lived under Communism. I've lived in a Social Democracy. And the USA is a Representative Republic. Given the continued intrusion into citizens' lives by the government, I am very interested in following the Tenth Amendment movement.
