I don't want medical students treating me?

Postby khalid » Wed Apr 25, 2012 8:46 am

My GP has been having several medical students in his practice (PA's as well). I understand they need to learn & are under the supervision of my GP

I interact with the student the entire time and most of the time they dart out the door, several times, to consult with my GP.

I am extremely uncomfortable with this. My grandmother died due to medical malpractice and I have a hard time trusting physicians. I trust my doctor and being treated by someone I know nothing about scares me. I would not have a problem if the student only observed my actual physician for my appointments.

I'd feel bad if I told the students ' you need to go find me the doctor & I do not want you treating me.'

Should I try to explain this to my GP or bring it up to the student directly? How or what is the best way to address this situation ?

The doctor should be seeing you not the student. Something doesn't seem right about this at all. I would never be comfortable about this. Speak up or switch doctors!

Its your health, your doctor, your choice. It is normal to feel that way, not a lot of people want students dealing with them because learning can mean mistakes. Just tell your GP that you don't want to be treated by med students.

A lot of people don't want to be a part of someone's learning experience especially if the matter deals with their life.
You are the customer in this transaction and have a right to voice concern.
If I were you, I'd politely inform the doctor that you are uncomfortable with the residents or interns. Most doctors would oblige you but if he/she is one of the exceptions, switching physicians might be a possible choice for you.
