I have an invention but how do i sell it or can i just sell the idea?

i want to make some money how do i patent my invention do i need to make a prototype first and patent it so no steals my invention

You need to file a patent application. The Patent & Trademark office will give you a "Patent Pending," which protects it until the actual patent is granted. You can sell the idea, but that's rare (unless it's a super idea).
