I live in brampton on and found out my basment was illegall?

about 7 months ago I rented a basment aparement I know in brampton 3000 of them are legal... when I rented it my best friend cam with me to ask questions... I asked them 3 times if it was a legal apartment and they assured me it was... about 3 months ago we had a dryer fire... one of the smoke alarms in a area in the basment was disconnected .... there are 2 units in the basment and the other tenats had disconnected it... i got a call from the fire marshall yesterday explaing to me that it was illegall and now we have less than 60 days to find a new place... my landlords havs said nothing and asked me yesterday when I will be paying my rent ... i spoke with the city and the woman told me to take them to small claims court and sue them based on the fact that they told me it was legal and I have it in writing she also said that because of the curcumstance im not liable to pay rent considering now its been deemed illegall that the city will be coming in the next 2 weeks to shut off the power to the basment to make sure that they convert it back... does this sound right

Sounds right to me. They can't take you to court to collect rent on an illegal apartment, but you can't LIVE in an illegal apartment. Better pack up your stuff and get out.

It is the best you are going to get. People lie, they lie to your face, now you know to go and check with the authorities about things like that not with the person who is making money from the deal. Hard lesson to learn but valuable for your whole life.

I would just start looking for a place now. If they want to come after you for your rent, they can try. If they fail to return your security deposit, take them to small claims court for the deposit and the inconvenience of the situation; you might get an extra month's rent out of them.
