If I purchase items in a house sale?

Postby tahmelapachme33 » Sun Feb 26, 2012 1:29 pm

My friend and his common law partner have split up, she left him with all the bills, he received an eviction notice and started selling his belongings. I purchased multiple items with receipts to prove. Now the ex has come back for these items and is furious he sold them. They have lived together for 8 years. The police arrived at my home and saw the receipts but are saying it is both of theirs property and not mine, even though I purchased it. Do I legally need to give the items back without a refund or can I really be charged for buying something?

I wouldnt. this is NOT a police matter its a contract dispute..make the ex sue you for the stuff to be returned.

You could be charged with fencing stolen items. You have to give the items back if they weren't your friend's to sell. But your friend should pay you back as well. You can sue him for your money back for misrepresenting the items as his if he doesn't pay you.

This would be a civil matter (Breach of Contract), and not a criminal matter.
