Is $40 worth going to small claims court?

not really, but sometimes principals are more valuable lessons

Is spending hours and hours on this, traveling to court several times, the court time, other inconveniences...is all this worth $40, which you still may never recover.

I don't think so. But it all depends on your income. I mean, if that 40 dollars is going to make you starve, then the cost of court for you (if you lose) will be much higher.
