Is It Against The Law To Move My Mailbox?

My husband and I just purchased a new home. In this neighborhood, the mailboxes are located at the beginning of the property at top of driveway. We just noticed after moving in that our mailbox is located across the street. How do I go about moving it and/or who is it that I notify?

our old house had 2 mailboxes on it when we purchsed it, one was for the tenant the other was for hte salon. we wanted to use the salon one but the mailman would put it in the other one and told us to take down the salon one. until we took it down it was a hit or miss what one our mail would be in. we had different mail people alot of the time...   I would ask before you move it..

It?s not illegal to move it but make sure that the box is where the carrier can get to it. Many times the reason that the box is across the street is because the carrier only makes one pass on your street and will only drop if the box is on the right side of the street.

You must go down to your local post office and talk with the stationmaster. They will most likely have no problem with you moving the mailbox but must be warned beforehand to avoid any confusion. Some things to keep in mind when moving a mailbox are Make sure that nothing is blocking access to the mailbox. A curbside mailbox must be placed so that the post man has access to it without leaving his/her vehicle. I hope this helps :-)

The local Postmaster I moved mine last year.  My mailbox was right in the middle or out U-shaped driveway.  We wanted it across from one of the entrances.  It was simple.  I went to the Post Office and asked for permission.  I was ready with pictures and a detailed explanation, and all the PostMaster told me was to make sure I didn't block any fire hydrants or driveways and, if possible, put the mailbox with others on the road(it wasn't possible).  I didn't need anything else. It is he or she who has the authority to tell you what you may or may not do with your mailbox.  On rural routes, both sides of the street often have mailboxes on one side, grouped together or in a 'gang box' to save time and gas for the postal carrier.  This may well be the deciding factor.  But call and see what is allowable for you.
