Technically yes, it's illegal if they saw you. However, it would be a grey area if you had a privacy fence or hedge around the perimeter of your property that would make it difficult for them to see you. If they saw you doing it through the slats of the fence, then it's not an issue, because they must've been looking pretty hard at that point to see your goods.
