Legal Aid is so inundated with criminal cases, they aren't going to help in civil cases at all. You either need to do a do-it-yourself divorce, hire a paralegal (he or she will help you get the right paperwork, on the court calender, etc., but can't provide legal help) or hire a lawyer.

In some counties, they will waive either the entire cost or discount the fees for divorce if you show proof that you are financially struggling. Ask about this at your local office.

You can get a divorce just about as easily as you got married by filing the paperwork yourself. There are various online resources out there where you can get the forms. Hell, I've even seen DIY kits for divorce, among other things, at Staples.

Keep in mind, this will only end the legal aspect of the marriage. If you want a Typical American Divorce full of courtroom drama over cash, property, and kids, that still costs big bucks.

Contact your local Legal Aid office, and inquire there. I had Legal Aid represent me in a minor civil matter when I was in college, and because I was low-income, they didn't charge me, even after winning damages for me in the case.
