Is this against Child Labor Laws?

Postby hwistlere31 » Wed Jul 11, 2012 6:48 am

So here's my story.
My mom owns a nursing home, yes that's right, administrator. So whenever I get into any trouble around the house (from a messy room to drinking alcohol) She forces me to do some 'volunteer hours' and go work in her nursing home kitchens. For 7 hours with a 30 minute break for lunch. Is this considered to be against Child Labor Laws? I need to be able to prove it to her. I've threatened to call Child Services multiple times, but have never done it, because I don't want my mom to go to jail or anything, I just want her to realize that what she's doing is wrong. By the way, I'm 13.

Child labor laws do not apply to family owned businesses, I can see why you get in trouble.

She either owns or she doesn't, there is no such thing as a part time owner, a family owned business applies when any of the family works there,

Child labor laws really don't apply to family owned businesses.

Nothing illegal going on here.

Thats tricky..
Because technically it is illegal to work without consent from the government under 15.. But at the same time, it is your mother.. So its complicated. Do you have a police officer who works at your school? Maybe talk to your school guidance counsellor to see what you can do about that. He/she could probably help you find the resources you need to get out of the situation.
Good luck!
