The Arab world at one point led the world in science during the Middle Ages while Europe was in turmoil, but once the Enlightenment came about the Western world once more became the leader in science. When the Ottomans conquered the Byzantine Empire, many Byzantine scholars fled to Europe with their knowledge of Greek and Roman scientific advancements and philosophies and were able to re-introduce them to Western society. You could say the Ottomans unintentionally triggered the Renaissance by destroying the Byzantine Empire. Just my opinion though. But history does make this suggestion.
