Legality of using Inline skates in a City?

Im going to go to College as of September and wanted to get back into inline skating, as it would make transport so much easier. Me being a Complete goody goody just wanted to know what restrictions there are e.g. driving on roads, rolling on the pavement... I live in Bournemouth, Dorset. I searched the Web from lows to highs... but could not find any sorts of guidelines anywhere online. 10 points for who ever can provide me with the knowledge i seek, with a source that is (unless you phoned a branch of law enforcement, in which case I'd be mega happy).
