Postby Farnleigh » Sat Apr 26, 2014 2:20 pm

My mom will be going on medicare next year and needs to know if I can stay on her medical insurance. I have epilepsy and cannot afford medical insurance on my own. Can I stay on her insurance even though she is going on medicare next year?Or do I have to get my own insurance if medicare won't let me stay on her insurance? Help please.

Probably not Medicare is a separate insurance ?company?.  When on medicare your mother will be paying premiums to medicare from her social security benefit.  You cannot be covered by her medicare policy. She will no longer need her current insurance policy and would be paying double premiums if she kept it.   She cannot receive benefits from both unless there is some kind of provision for the current policy paying for what medicare does not pay.  Beware the policy could also have a provision that it gets canceled if she goes on medicare.  She can also obtain a supplemental policy which will pay for expenses that medicare does not pay.  It?s a good idea to get one of these.  Coverage is guaranteed in certain time frames.   You should investigate whether her current policy will allow you to retain coverage if she is removed and what it would cost.  First read the policy, then call the company.  There is a wide range of provisions in policies from different companies. Does your epilepsy render you disabled so that you can obtain Social Security disability benefits? If so, you would become eligible for medicare for yourself and also get supplemental insurance.   You should also consider the option of not getting medicare for her but continuing with the present policy.  However, some day you will have the problem of getting your own insurance.   FuzzyGold 59 months ago Please sign in to give a compliment.
