Negotiating pay with potential employers.?

Postby cuartio52 » Wed Mar 28, 2012 10:10 am

I am going to be 19 when I finis high school and I will be turning 18 in april, and I want a job! However; my mother is on social security and gets a check for having custody of me. And I am allowed to work however a limit on yearly earnings. Although I don't get any of the money she gets which I don't feel is fair. BTW. Either way, I wanna be able to earn just under the MAX that I am allowed to earn without anything happening to the check she gets. And I figure 40 hours at 7.25 an hour weekly would come just under that! Although I wouldn't earn much either way, any where I work considering I am still in school. I won't be under the labor law anymore. And I want to seem more appealing to employers in the sense that I could be a full time employee rather than only able to work for example 32 hours a week at a slightly higher rate. Would they allow you to request a lower wage and still take you? Or do they put out what they are gonna pay and thats what they go for? Or how does that work? It;s a complicated situation.

If your mother receives SSDI due to her having a disability, then the benefit she receives for you will end when you are 18. If she receives a survivor benefit due to your father being deceased, then the benefit would go directly to you at age 18 until you graduate high school up to age 19. If it is a survivor benefit your income will not affect your benefit. You get it until your graduate high school no matter what your income is. If she is receiving a survivor caregiver benefit for herself due to having a child under the age of 16 or disabled, then her income would affect that benefit and there would be a limit to what she could earn before losing a portion of the benefit, but the children's benefits would not be affected by income.
Keep in mind if you are going to continue living at home, your Mom has the right to charge you rent once the benefit is paid to you directly at age 18.

You really need to talk to the Social Security Administration to find out the rules for the type of benefit that is being paid on your behalf.

Most jobs for low skilled, inexperienced labor is a set hourly rate. It would be odd to negotiate the pay down. Good luck with your job search.
