Hi! I help run a pit bull rescue in Arizona called Ruff Road Rescue. I am moving to Massachusetts and want to start another "branch" there. We have 501(c)3 status, but I was wondering if you know what else I would have to do tax/state wise. The original rescue will still be running in AZ, I just want to start another rescue under the same name/organization in MA.
Thanks!
ANSWER: Every state requires a registration, similar to filing Articles of
Incorporation, which is usually called for a "foreign corporation"
and that applies to out of state corporations that want to "do
business" in that state. You would need to be registered by the
time you open your office in that new state. For that State filing see Massachusetts Division of Corporations
Nonprofit Corporations site:
www.sec.state.ma.us/cor/corpweb/cornp/npfrm.htm
Their contact information would be useful for you, as it appears that they don't have the applicable form on that page above.http://www.sec.state.ma.us/cor/corcon.htm is their contact information. Harvey Mechanic, Attorney at Law - [email protected]

Thanks! So I do not need to re-apply for non-profit status, only register with the state?
