At 5 am on September 7th, 2011 my sister, Breanna, soon-to-be brother in law, Andy and I left their house in Laceyville PA on our way to the Towanda hospital. My sister was just over a week over her due date and the doctor wanted her to come in for induction. We got to the hospital about 6 and they started getting her ready. By 9 the doctor finally got the Pitocin started. The contractions slowly became stronger. When they came in to check on her at noon they said that she hadn’t progressed any but not to worry. They also informed us that it was starting to rain really badly and roads were starting to close. When Andy suggested taking me home before it got too bad the nurse said that that was a bad idea because he may not make it there and if he did he probably would make it back.
About 6pm the Dr. came back in and checked her again. He said that she still had not progressed any and he was going to turn the Pitocin off. He said that because of the flood if the baby didn’t come on his own then they weren’t going to push him out. Dr. Cama said that the flood had gotten bad and they wanted to avoid delivering Ryan. Breanna was upset but she understood. After the Pitocin was turned off for a while my sisters contractions slowed down a lot and weren’t as strong. About supper time the nurse came in and told Breanna that because labor had stopped she would be able to eat and took all of our orders. Even though they were going to bring us supper Andy wanted Burger King. I thought it would be closed because of the flood but Andy wrote down what we wanted and headed over. He came back with our burger king food and we ate while watching the Syfy channel.
In the room we had one hospital bed and one recliner. There was also an extra mattress in the room that Andy used as a bed. Even though we had a place to sleep we didn’t do much sleeping. We played computer games and watched ghost movies. About one o’clock we finally turned everything off and went to bed. I figured sense we had nothing to do tomorrow I would be able to sleep in and maybe even take a nap. But oh boy was I ever wrong. The nurses came in at 6:30 to wake us up and ask us what we wanted for breakfast. I was so exhausted and all I wanted to do was go back to sleep, but once I’m up I’m up and there’s no going back to sleep. When the lady came back in to get our treys she told us that they were going to discharge Breanna and move us to a smaller room because they were life lighting another woman in and they needed our room.
After moving everything into the much smaller room we were going to be staying in, Breanna and I went to stretch our legs and get a snack from the vending machine. When we got back Andy was looking at a baby in the nursery. The baby’s father was next to him. We stopped to look as they wheeled the baby out and into the room with his mother. When we all got back in our room Andy told us that that was his sixth baby and their first boy. I could also tell that he was upset that he wasn’t able to see Ryan. It wasn’t just him that was getting upset. All three of us were getting angry about being stuck in a hospital room with not much room to work with and not much sleep. We were all getting on each other’s nerves. It didn’t help that we had people calling my mom because we put on Facebook that we were waiting up for one of the nurses coming in from Wyalusing so we could ask what roads she took. My mom wouldn’t have cared but they were saying that as soon as she told us how she got to the hospital that we were going to go home. Even though we had no plans at all to drive home in the dark and never said we were even thinking about it.
That night as we were all getting ready for bed there was a huge thud on the wall. We then heard people yelling and crying in the room next to us. Another doctor, Dr. Black, was on the phone trying to find another hospital that could life flight the lady in the next room to a hospital more capable of the care they would need. As we listened in to all their conversations we found out that the woman in the room next to us was only six and a half months pregnant and was having a lot of blood pressure problems. They were afraid that they would lose the baby. After a few hours they were able to get her blood pressure back under control and they were both fine.
Although the stress in the room next to us had lessened, the stress in our room only got higher. We were in a very tiny room with only one bed and a chair that didn’t recline and none of us got much sleep the night before. Bree and Andy shared the bed and I got the chair. Again, like the night before, we didn’t go to bed till almost midnight. All the noises and all the babies crying I didn’t get much sleep again.
