Drunk driving is when an individual drinks alcohol over the limit and drives. The use of alcohol often starts at the age of eleven and the average age for drinking is fourteen. Driving under the influence of alcohol is a major health problem in the United States as it accounts for a high number of road fatalities; hence, there is a need for stricter drunk driving rules in the United States in order to reduce drunken driving fatalities.
There is a need for the introduction and implementation of new drunk driving laws by the legislature, because presently the united States drunk driving laws are too lenient. The continuous rate of drunken driving fatalities makes a case that the united States drunk driving laws are too lenient and makes a call for stricter laws. According to Valenti “countries with strict drunk driving penalties have a far lower incidence of accidents than the United States (1). The United States being a first world country is weak in enforcing strict punishment for drunk drivers. Valenti is emphasizing on the fact that the united States need to improve their present laws and be firm in enforcing these new laws. There is a need for the United States to improve on their severity of its drunk driving penalties just the way the other part of the world have done and this is giving them a reduced rate of drunk driving fatalities. The claim of the leniency of the United States drunk driving laws is further stated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), this is a prominent body when it comes to the issue of drunken driving fatalities. It claims that the drunken driving laws are severe enough. “Despite great strides in awareness, education and enforcement in the last two decades the United States still has one of the most lenient drunken driving standards in the world”. (NHTSA of existing laws. There is a need for stricter laws to be introduced as the United States ranks behind the world when it comes to effort to combat drunk driving and more efforts need to be put in place by the implementation of harsher laws so as to reduce the high rate of repeat offenders and first time offenders.
The rate of repeat offenders is rising and the need to suppress this rate should be attended to immediately. Statistics supports the implementation of stricter rules, as the continual rate of the repeat offenders increases. The rate of repeat offenders is of great concern as it is at a very high level. This is due to the fact that there is not stricter punishment for the first time offenders. According to Sandra C. Lapham,(et all) National Highway Traffic Administration data indicates that 21-48% o of drivers are arrested or convicted for DUI had previous offenses of alcohol impaired driving.(1) The data above further emphasizes the need for more severe punishment to be implemented as can be deduced from the statistics above. The ineffective sanctions available to DWI offenders, previous offenders still on committing the same offense because they were not properly dealt with and have not learnt their lessons and these sanctions should be made harsher. The high percentage of repeat offenders in the country further highlights the need for harsher punishment and also the leniency of the present rules. In addition, unless swift actions are taken the situations and the cases of repeat offenders would continue. Furthermore, Approximately one third of individuals arrested for driving under the influence (DUI) in the United States are rearrested indicating that remedial intervention for dui offenders are not effective”(1). This further explains the leniency of the United States drunk driving laws and the need for stricter punishment. The use of minor punishment does not seem to be paying off hence there is a cure to follow the footstep of other developed nations who have put the problem of DUI under control due to the implementation of strict laws. Furthermore, the united states need to be prominent in enforcing their laws and they need to be more advanced in enforcing those laws. The issue of repeat offender’s further calls for stricter punishments to be implemented if not for the situation will continue to escalate; the government had better take action and even ignore the critics.
One of the methods that have worked well to help reduce the incidence of drunken driving offenses is the ignition interlock. The ignition interlock is a product of technology that works with the aid of a breathalyzers prevents vehicle of persons above the BAC (Blood alcohol concentration) level from turning on. It has had a positive effect since its introduction, but critics keep on saying it well over the line when it comes to issue of strictness. Despite its success critics have continued to look for ways to make it look bad. Some say it is too expensive, others say it hinders social drinkers from drinking, but their greatest argum

it's a good argument, but I disagree with the premise that strict rules are required. There should be no rules - just consequences.

Thanks for the post. I think the law should be much more harsh on those people who drive drunk. R.I.P to all who have died because of a selfish ass muncher who had to get behind the wheel while drunk.
