Question for unions, why should workers get paid more on weekends? sorry but how is that a human right?

Postby wardell » Fri Jul 06, 2012 8:07 pm

Some people actually prefer working on weekends. Many college students would prefer it. Those people would be more than happy to work at the normal rates.

Why do labor unions think they speak for the poor?

And their usual reply is,' if you can't get under labor union laws then you probably are an incompetent worker'.

Funny how they don't apply that logic to teachers who don't want merit based pay.

Clearly you haven't spent a lot of time reading your American History... if you think it was better without the Unions, you're even more clueless than your question lets on...

I am a teacher. How would you give out merit pay? It is impossible.

Merit pay is usually based on the woman who puts out for the principal.

Life is not a standardized test. How well you do on test has nothing to do with how you do in life. A lot of being a teacher has to do with inspiring students to have a decent character, and to enjoy learning.

Meirt pay is based on the assumption that the ONLY thing that matters is bubble in, multiple choice, standardized tests, and teaching to that test. That is a form of insanity.

Regarding your statement that no one likes weekends. I can think of two songs in the popular culture that refute your strange position: 1) Everybody is workin' for the weekend. 2)Friday, Friday, gotta get down on Friday. And so forth

It's not and they don't think that it is.

I'm not a fan of unions generally but I don't have a problem with them getting paid more on the weekends. It's part of the negotiated terms of the contract. Whoever hired the company doesn't HAVE to give them weekend hours.

I have some friends who work in construction who get the extra pay on the weekends, basically it encourages the people who hired the company AND the company to give their employees a more consistent schedule and when they don't, the employees earn more money.

Personally, I'd rather see higher pay across the board. But if the workers want to get paid more for weekend work, the union has a right to bargain for it.

Getting extra pay on weekends has NEVER been advocated by ANY union EVER.

Maybe holidays and overtime but not weekends.

So true, we should completely gut all the union benefits for the Firemen fighting those wildfires right now.

I don't think anyone said it's a human right? but in CAPITALISM you pay a premium when you want someone to work when they normally don't want to... if they want to work then, then you don't have to pay the premium...

most people don't want to work on the weekend... so they like a premium...

unions are just an extension of capitalism... a group of workers banding together to get benefits they want... they are selling their labor in a group hoping to get the best deal... that could include making more on weekends...

there really isn't anymore to it... you're trying to drag in rights and poverty, and that has nothing to do with it...

Many college students (your example) would not belong to a union. They would be part time employees.

Think before you ask dumb questions, please.
