You might not know of Marion Donovan’s claim to fame. She invented something most parents use thousands of times when her baby’s crib became wet each night, Donovan used a shower curtain to create the world’s first plastic diaper cover. After patenting her device and calling it the “Boater”. Donovan’s business sense guided her to sell the idea for which she received $1 million (US) in 1951. The Boater design led to the birth of the disposable diaper, and its sales currently bring in nearly $5 billion (US) a year.
