Service commitment for navy seal officers?

Postby kendon19 » Thu Mar 01, 2012 1:12 am

I will probably be attending the next year and it is my dream to be a seal officer. I know how challenging it is to be selected, as there are only aprox. 30 selected per USNA class to attend BUD/S, but i am in great shape and am doing the seal workouts and plan on continuing them throughout my 4 years at Navy. I am not here askin this to be told that i will not make it so please save your time if you want to tell me its too hard. When i set my mind to something i do it.

My question is how does service commitment work for Academy seals? Is it just the standard 5 years? What i am really interested in (because i know for a fact I wont want to be in the teams for just 3 years since about 2 of those will be spent training not on a real seal team) is how does it work after those 5 years? Do you have to commit for a given amount of time or are you allowed to complete your service whenever you wish? Being a part of the seal team brotherhood and leading seals is my dream but i also know the type of stress it will put on my family and the family i hope to have one day so i guess i would be looking to leave the navy in my early 30s to be a dad and go to law school. I think i would be satisfied with about 10 years of service.

If anyone could please explain that concept to me that would be fantastic.

The only easy day was yesterday

I'm afraid you're not going to like my answer.

In my experience, SEALs have absolute commitment. None of them that make it... that I'm aware of... go in thinking about getting out.

In my experience, SEALs are pretty bright. None of them would think about putting themselves through what they're going to go through as if it's a passing fancy.

You talk the talk... "SEAL team brotherhood"... but you don't seem willing to walk the walk. You would step on the backs of your brothers in an effort to fulfill your selfish goals.

Young man. You REALLY have no idea what you're talking about. I'm sorry.

I know a retired SEAL Officer who has an old piece of driftwood on his mantel. It was shot off a larger piece of white driftwood on a Vietnam beach... you can see the places where a .50 chopped the piece off. His men had flattened out a rather large shell casing and had had it inscribed, "Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for thou leadest me. Thy rod and thy staff do comfort me. And thou art the meanest [SOB] in the valley." His men must have thought pretty highly of him. They'd have followed him into hell, because they had every confidence he'd be there to lead them out.

From your post, you're loyalty is divided. You won't be there unless it suits your fancy. You're going to be in law school.

I hate to give you encouragement, but I believe you'll find that a lot of guys quit after about 12 years. But it's not for selfish reasons. If you make SEAL, you'll find out why.

Me? I retired from the Navy after a quarter of a century... first 4 years enlisted, the rest commissioned... and I got to know a few SEALs along the way.
