I'm not looking for answers that bash Republican or Democrats, liberals or conservatives. I'm looking for thoughtful answers about why our government is failing so badly to serve the interests of the American people.
In my opinion, the main problem is the influence of special interests about campaign finance and campaign spending - all of which are tied together.
Many of the pressing issues of our time are not recent developments. For example, it has been known that our health care system was in need of reform for several decades - at least since the late 1970's. But absolutely nothing significant has been done to help solve the problem in all that time (setting aside any debate on Obama's health care plan). The same can be said for illegal immigration, oil consumptions/fuel standards/pollution, failing infrastructure, and other issues.
In the case of health care, any President from Carter to Obama could have taken on issues such as tort/malpractice reform and protecting patients with pre-existing conditions. But it seems that no one has had the political will to stand up to the special interests from the health insurance industry or tort lawyers who have spent countless millions to prevent legislation which would have limited their ability to make money.
And the same can be said for the influence of oil money on many issues related to the environment and the development of oil alternatives.
If the system is fundamentally broken, does it really matter which party or candidate is in Washington making decisions?
