Should I become a lawyer?

Postby aswynn81 » Fri Apr 01, 2011 9:45 pm

I am 13 years old, and have good grades. I am going to start volunteering for my community and working when I turn 15. I have always wanted to become a lawyer. Since i was like, 9. I have researched the job, compared the duties and salaries of criminal and corporate lawyers (leaning toward corporate/commercial), and have a "master plan" for me to move to connecticut and attend Yale University, achieve a masters or doctorates degree (more research to be done on that), and attend Yale Law School for I have no idea how long (again, more research). I aspire to get a high paying job as a lawyer. But I was reading all these things that law professions are becoming a dying career path (or something like that) and that the unemployment of graduating law students is up to 30% (please correct my facts if they are incorrect). By the time I am graduating high school, will these things change? I am very sad and almost depressed because I have had my mind set on this for so, so long. Should I choose something else? Even just writing this makes my hands tremble for fear of lost dreams and ultimate failure. What do I do?! **ANY HELP PLEASE** Thank you.

Realistically most lawyer don't get paid high salaries, especially recent graduates. I would suggest you do as many internships in college with courts and lawyer; maybe even law enforcement if you are interested in criminal law. Reading and understand law is very difficult at time and can become boring quickly for those who don't have a passion. Grade, money, family history, or any other external factor should NOT be a decision maker. You make the decision based on your passion and interest. You are very young, you will probably change your mind about career path 50 more times, realistically. Finally, do not fear failure, some of the best people across the board have failed many times in their life. If you decide that your passion and interest are in mopping floors at the high school, then be the best damn moper there ever was.

I don't see that it is a dying career. Businesses will always need lawyers to oversee business transactions and contracts and people will always be suing the government and one another. I also don't think that there is any lack or decrease of people getting divorces or arrested. Lawyers are necessary for the country to continue to function
