So far do I have a good chance at the Coast Guard Academy?

Postby ricki » Wed Mar 07, 2012 7:03 pm

I have always wanted to go to the Coast Guard Academy and I would like to know about my chances:
I attend an extremely competitive private high school and I am not sure of my class ranking but I am confident that it is within the top 15% or top 10%
Freshman Year GPA: 3.75/3.8
Sophomore Year: 4.2/ 4.1 (still in second semester)
Currently I have only one AP class (AP European History) and one honors class (Honors Chemistry)
Honors Chemistry is my only B
I plan on taking four more AP classes and two or three more honors classes
I am very active in my community I have over one hundred service hours and I volunteer every weekend
I am in Tennis, and I swim and golf on the side
I am thinking of getting an internship with my congressman
I am active in my church
I plan on applying early action
My only concern is that I am not the best in math and unfortunately my last math class will be pre-calc and I heard that is low for the Academy
Any thoughts on my chances?

I'm not sure if the CG is considered "military" or not, but...coming from a military family, most of whom have attended military school (Westpoint, Naval Academy, etc.), I would say that right now you definitely have a competitive edge. You seem intelligent and maintain good grades—that's a good sign when looking to get into any college, I would say. Also, being active in church/sports show dedication, which for any branch of the military (or similar, like Coast Guard) is pretty sought after. Applying early action will also help. I'm not sure how much different classes (pre-calc, math and whatnot) really matter, but I doubt that not taking a higher math will matter very much. I'm also a sophomore, and right now I would say that right now you seem to have a good chance. Keep up your good grades, and show courage and strength in general (schoolwork, sports, etc.) and I'm sure that the CG will be lucky to have you!

You're on the right track.

Keep doing what you're doing. Keep up the grades, try to get a team captain spot for Tennis next year, do well on the SAT or ACT, apply to AIM this time next year.

My guess - if you keep doing what you're doing (to include what I outlined above), you'll get in.

Good luck!
