Coast Guard Academy advice?

Postby andor25 » Fri Nov 25, 2011 6:10 am

I am going to be a senior in high school this year, and I would really like to go to the Coast Guard Academy. I applied for the AIM program this summer and was accepted into some sort of lottery, but was not chosen to attend. This is my information, I would appreciate any advice.

Academic Information
Class Rank: 40 out of 567 (Top 10%)
GPA: 3.911
SAT 1: 1380
SAT2(with writing) 2060
ACT: 30
To date: 5 Honors and 4 AP credits
National Honor Society, Sociedad Honoraria Hispanica(Spanish National Honor Society) member
I recieved an award this year for exceptional acheivement in Mathematics and Science this year from the Society of Women Engineers

Extracurriculars
7-8 Years of Boy Scouts(Countless hours of community service) Have had my Eagle Project approved, just need to complete it and turn it in for final review
3 Years of High School Soccer, no varsity
1 Year of High School Lacrosse, no varsity

Work Experience:
I have started a summer job at the Peace Trust in my town doing groundskeeping i have logged 30 hours so far

I have a question also, I have played three years of soccer, without a varsity letter and i am worried i may not make the soccer team next year and i understand athletics are very important to the Academy. Although i may not make the team how do i show the academy i am still athletic and in shape, i run every other day to stay in shape and work out. I also ran a triathalon this spring and placed well for my first time. Will my lacking of a varsity letter really hurt my chances, and how are they? I plan on applying for early action hopefully, if i have my eagle in time.

Thanks

Your resume is great, but yes, the lack of a varsity letter is indeed a weak point. You get that, your chances are great, particularly if you finish Eagle. Without a varsity letter, your application could go either way.

My advice: if you've ran a triathalon, you can almost certainly make a cross country team. Because of the way cross country competitions work (even runners who don't count in your own top 7 can make other school's runners score lower), at most schools, everyone on the team is considered varsity and gets a letter. If you can't make varsity soccer in the fall - go out for cross country.

The varsity letter will certainly help, and should assure your chances. While you may (or may not) get in without one, your chances will be much, much better (particularly for early action) with one.

Good luck!
