I hope you're kidding. Georgia, the state in the USA, was NOT attacked. The country of Georgia, which used to be part of the Soviet Union, is the Georgia the news is about. Two provinces of Georgia have large ethnic Russian populations. These two provinces are of strategic important to Russia. South Ossetia has a large oil and natural gas pipelines passing through it, which the Russians, particularly their Prime Minister) want in order to dominate oil and gas flow to Europe.(Last year Russia, under the leadership of Vladimir Putin, former KGB, cut off natural gas to the Ukraine because Russia wanted to demonstrate they still have dominance in the region.) The other province, Abkhazia, happens to be a port on the Baltic Sea, which Vladimir Putin would like to have because it is the terminus of the oil and gas pipelines in question. A portion of Georgia?s standing army was in Iraq when Russia invaded. They were assisting in peace-keeping efforts in Iraq. 2,000 Georgian troops(of about 37,000) were released from service in Iraq per a previous agreement with the US, and were returned to Georgia. It must be made clear that the Georgians were the initial aggressors attempting to control a separatist uprising in South Ossetia. The Russians jumped on this "to protect ethnic Russians," but did not stop at the border of South Ossetia. The Russians have taken over much of Georgia, presumably under orders from Putin, and as of today(8/15/08) Russian soldiers were filmed robbing a bank in Gori, which is far inside Georgia, and not part of S. Ossetia or Abkhazia. This is THREE DAYS after the Russian president(a Putin puppet) agreed to a cease-fire and withdrawal of Russian troops from Georgia to their locations on August 6th. This is not happening. Russian troops are doing whatever they want, wherever they want. They are bombing non-miltary targets, forcing native Georgians out of their homes and turning them into refugees.
