Was there more Hollywood inspired karate guys in 90's MMA?

Postby lifton » Mon Apr 23, 2012 5:05 pm

I'm in my early 20s and 80's/90's karate action heroes like Van Damme, Jackie Chan, and Jeff Speakman have been a big inspiration to me. Lately I've been stretching my legs for long periods of time and practicing kicks. I'm 5' 11", caucasian, and have long legs. I'm probably gonna enroll in TKD classes to refine my skills.

I'm not interested in getting involved in MMA but I've noticed there's very few guys participating nowadays with powerful, sweeping high kicks and a faithful karate background that hasn't been watered down. I'm wondering if this reflects the times of how guys like Van Damme have fallen out of the spotlight so probably aren't acting as role models to as wide of aspiring fighters.
