What are the pros and cons of government action in the case of monopolies?

I need a little help for my Microeconomics class. We are supposed to discuss the concepts of "efficiency" and "equality" in our arguments as well. Any help would be great, thanks!

the truth is taking away the right for a monopoly to take place is against a free market which our government was founded, but then again with out competion coorperations would run us basically to death and force us to pay what ever price they want us to for even the cheapest products.
