What can be wrong with my mother's vision?(PLEASE answer:( )?

Postby jan46 » Fri May 04, 2012 5:20 pm

My mother, who is 55 years old, woke up with a horrible headache that eventually went away..but it was accompanied by by "floaters" in her left eye's vision..which has yet to go away for going on 12 plus hours. She says they are pretty bad, to where sh sees "bugs"..saying bug-like figures out of her peripheral vision. She also says she saw/sees lines..like vibrant lines as well. The "floaters" are like blinking lights..and currently she is seeing a yellow flashing light.

She does have sinus problems..horribly. She is seeing a surgeon to perform surgery on her ears due to her sinus problem.(Otosclerosis.)
However, she has to wait for the surgery until her right ear heals from an ENT doctor that drilled a hole in her eardrum and didn't drain fluids or anything nor did he put in an ear tube, which he was testing for her in the first place.

I do not know if her vision in her left ear could have anything to do with her sinuses or with the malpractice of the old ENT doctor. (I don't know much about the sinuses and how they work together.)
She is refusing to see a doctor today..I am worried and wanting to know what a possibility could be.
I am taking her to the doctor tomorrow...she is on of the one's that hates going..and I don't hold it against her, but she needs to go this time, I think.

Please help with any ideas and or medical facts.
Thank you and God Bless!

Many floaters along with bright or flashing lights is a classic signature for a Detached Retina. Immediate medical intervention is necessary to stop possible complete vision loss in that eye. A trip to the ER is indicated ... RIGHT NOW.

ON EDIT: Sorry, Cyrax, my answer was first and that is why it is listed first which means that YOUR answer was copied from mine. You are the troll and you are not a Board Certified Optician and Lab Tech that you claim to be. I have reported you to Yahoo so they can ban you from the board.

Sounds like a detached retina or detached vitreous. Either might indicate uveitis, especially when paired with the sinus symptoms (which can occur with some of the more unusual forms of uveitis). I would hope that you encourage her to see an EYE doctor about this, as soon as possible.

It doesn't matter if she likes the doctor, she surely likes her sight.

This sounds JUST like migraine with aura.

I get the exact same symptoms with a migraine. The floaters and squiggly lines are the "aura". They can last as little as a few minutes to a few days.

Your mom should talk to her doctor about it. She may need to adjust any medications (for instance, any hormone therapy is very dangerous to use when someone has this type of migraine), she may need to try some migraine medications for in case this happens again.

However since the other posters are CORRECT (as in it could be that as well...), your mom has to see a doctor. She could go blind if it is a detached retina and it goes untreated.
