What can I do to get my financial aid back?

Postby caffar » Wed Oct 26, 2011 1:57 am

I lost my financial aid due to the SAP laws. When I first went to college in 1994, I did not do well and ended up flunking out. I decided to go back to school last year and have gone three semesters, and when not including my grades from 1994, I have a 3.2 GPA. This semester I was lucky enough to have a family member loan me just enough money that I could take one class, but this is not an option for next semester. The advisers at my school are of no help. One response I got from them was to audit the classes I failed in 1994, and pass them. This is not an option, aside from the fact that I couldn't afford it, I was going for a completely different major, and I live 2,000 miles away from the school now. So if anyone has any information on how to get my financial aid back or of any alternate forms of aid I'd appreciate any information you have.

Until you bring your overall GPA up above a certain level, you won't qualify for aid again. HOWEVER, you can file a financial aid appeal at your current school, and I think you should. You've been taking classes there for a bit, and doing well in them, so you have at least a shot at winning an appeal. File the paperwork for an appeal, but I make no promises.

You will have to bring your GPA up by paying for your classes, but your previous GPA shouldn't mean anything now. Not only has it been a long time but you are at a new school. Talk to your school's financial aid office, not advising. There's something else going on probably.
