What do people do if they are in the middle of a lease and get a job and have to move?

Do they all just end up paying the remaining $10,000 for 7 months rent?

My old lease used to specify remedies for early termination, but now, it does not.

I am assuming that means that state landlord-tenant law applies, which is unfavorable in Virginia for tenants?

The only thing my lease says is that you pay rent until the landlord rents the apartment and you pay an early termination "cleaning fee."

You pay rent until a new tenant is found and you pay an early termination "cleaning" fee. That is what you agreed to when you signed the lease...right???

So you will pay the early termination cleaning fee and continue to pay rent until the landlord finds a new renter, which could take months. That's what people have to do-abide by the terms of the lease they signed. Does your lease allow subletting? Maybe you could find someone to sublet the rest of the lease term, or help the landlord find a new tenant to minimize the time you have to continue to pay rent.
