I think it is stupid. Just a way for the Coast Guard to get people in to a security type job. They have been flooded with people who want to cross-train into that rating.

Actually I thought everyone in the Coast Guard was a Maritime Law Enforcement officer.

Isn't that one of the Coast Guards core missions.

I think it's a good idea. Now we will have a rating that deals ONLY with conducting law enforcement duties - rather than as a collateral duty along with a long list of other things for which they are responsible.

It will be a year or two before all the bugs are worked out of the system, though. We have reformatted many other billets from other ratings to ME billets - and their use will be kind of squishy until we have a full grasp of what all they will be doing. We need to answer some questions, like, "Is it fiscally sound to have 1400 people locked in to doing nothing but law enforcement?"
