The land-use restrictions have effectively limited the available property that can be developed, so you're going to want to look SE for something more affordable. There are several nice communities along the Boulder Turnpike(rte 36) that have grown rapidly in response to the limited land available in Boulder county, and there are several northern burbs(look around Thornton, etc) with nice areas to live that are convenient to both Boulder and Denver. Depending on where your job(s) are, I'd suggest you give preference of proximity to the area you're going to be working rather than the area you want access to for less frequent trips. The Denver/Boulder area is HUGE(spreads nearly endlessly to the east) and still growing. As in many places, the infrastructure is trying to catch up, but it can still be a long commute if you put yourself in an inconvenient location to work.Best wishes relocating!
