What is the law concerning early bird specials?

Do you enter a contract when you sit down or can you be charged full price after the 'deadline' has passed. We sat down 20 mins before the evening rate was due on a buffet meal but were charged full price because we left 25 mins after the evening rate kicked in - extra food was provided 5 mins after 6pm but most of the time of sitting only the pre 6 food was available. We were not told that we would have to pay the rate at the time of leaving.
