What's the best major (for my double major) if I'm interested in going to law school?

Postby treasigh » Wed Apr 06, 2011 2:28 pm

I'm only a senior in high school but just thinking ahead. I'm narrowing down my colleges right now and trying to think of tentative majors.

I already know that I want to major in Spanish and I want to study abroad as much as possible. I am very interested in going to law school to become a lawyer (not sure which kind yet, although an immigration lawyer is most appealing to me right now). I'm not 100% sure I want to go to law school, I'm just considering it.

What other majors would you suggest considering if I'm interested in law school? I know that you don't have to have a specific major to go to law school, but I know some might be more advantageous than others. Also, something that would work well with a Spanish major so that I wouldn't have to take SO many extra classes would be great as well.

Thanks!

You have two options.

1) Double-major or major/minor with something that involves plenty of writing and analytical skills; ie, English, History, Philosophy. Stay away from the common "pre-law" majors, such as Political Science or Criminology - as they are only useful if you want to become a cop or get into law enforcement. They don't teach you the skills necessary for law students.

2) Double-major or major/minor with something that will allow you to get a job after graduation in case you don't want to become a lawyer anymore; ie, Engineering, Nursing, Computer Science. You can always take classes in English, Philosophy, etc along the way - you already know that you don't need a specific major, so having a back-up plan wouldn't hurt.

Hope that helps!
