Which of these colleges would you pick? 10 points for most helpful answer?

Postby dasco » Sun Jun 24, 2012 5:18 pm

So I'll be applying to college this fall (attending in fall 2013) and I was curious which of these colleges, weighing the details I'll provide, you would choose. I plan on majoring in Economics and take pre-law classes to prepare for law school. This list is not ranked. I have a 3.5-3.6 GPA (haven't got the official transcript yet, I'm homeschooled) and my SAT will be around 1800-2000.

1-IUSB-I list this one because it is local and I could live at home. Downside, I've heard it isn't very good, not to mention it'll be kinda boring. Not looking for 24/7 parties, but there isn't much to do there. Notre Dame is near by, but it's not the same. Upside, tuition is cheap, and as mentioned, I could live at home.

2-Purdue-I like Purdue because I have Aunts, Uncles and Cousins from both sides of the family down there, and it's one of Indiana's top schools. Downside, 3 hours away. Upside, nearby family, good academics, in-state tuition, and a good sports program (I'm not an athlete, but I enjoy watching college sports).

3-Indiana University, Bloomington-Upside, good economics program I hear, in-state tuition, Great Grand Parents only an hour away, and a good sports program. Downside, 4 and a half hours from home.

4-Michigan State-Upside, good academics, beautiful campus, I can see new places, great sports, only 2 and a half hours from home (closer than the others). Downside, out of state tuition.

5-Hillsdale College-It's the only private college I'm applying to. Upside, great school I hear, great financial aid system (privatized, no federal loans), also only about 2 and a half hours from home. Downside, 30 grand a year (not sure how much I'd pay after financial aid).

So, which would you choose, if you were accepted to all of them? I know this is my decision, I am just asking for more opinions. Thanks very much!

I would do Purdue. Trust me, with all the studying and hanging with all your new friends, your not going to miss you family as much as you think you will.

Michigan state is an awesome school! they have good parties and good teachers. the campus is beautiful and its close to the lake. lovely school! I'd love to go there, but it's too close to home for me.

I'd go to Indiana University in Bloomington. It has a better business school than Purdue, and the campus is nicer.

I say MSU, but that is because I am bias. I am from Michigan and I've heard lots of good things about MSU. The reason why I did not attend is because I am a fan of smaller schools, MSU doesn't give you any money, and I am not much of a party person.

But anyway, you have many things to consider. How much debt are you willing to get into? How important is reputation of the school? Do you like the environment surrounding the school? How important is family being near you? Do you like larger or smaller schools? Do you enjoy the college life of [insert school]? Which school has majors you are interested in? etc...

Visit each one. That will help you decide as well. :)
