Doctors began to double what they charged back in the 70's due to sudden extreme rise in the cost of malpractice insurance. I can only imagine what hospitals pay for this insurance. Putting a cap on the amount that can be won by these would reduce costs to all of us. If a doctor destroys a person's ability to work through malpractice or ruins their lives, they should pay a lot, no doubt about it but other law suits are just not worth the amount they are awarded. Then it is appealed, and appealed until the amount becomes reasonable. I wastes a lot of time and money.
This isn't only medical malpractice. I remember the woman who was initially awarded a million due to McDonald's coffee temperature and another man who sued a dry cleaner a million for losing a pair of his pants. The legal fees put the dry cleaner out of business even though they won the case due to the attorney fees. This kind of thing shouldn't happen.
