5) It is thought that the first African Americans arrived in 1619, about 20 of them. Actually, they arrived not as slaves, but became indentured servants or contract laborers in Virginia. At the end of their contract for service, these indentured servants would become free citizens. This carried on for several decades. Slavery was created in small steps. By the 1650's, African Americans were being treated as the property of others, or slaves. It wasn't until the 1660's that slavery laws were enacted.
6) Yes, I feel like slavery never ended. However, it was just transferred to other races. As corporate power has increased in the U.S., the people doing the "low" work that nobody wants to do is now the lower class - Jews, Italians, Mexicans, Eastern Europeans (Caucasians), African Americans and other races do the work and, no, I do not feel that these positions are exclusive to one single race.
I agree with Rebel Yankee. I am white and I have just as many, if not more, financial problems as some "black" people. In Louisiana, where I used to live, almost everyone who was black was on welfare. Up here in South Dakota, there aren't many, but most of them have high-paying jobs. It doesn't matter what color you are in the end. If you're going to start asking for reparations and restitution for races that have been wronged throughout history, be prepared for almost every person in the world to get reparations and restitution. Black people are not the only people that have been persecuted in history, they just seem to like to dwell on their shadowed past rather than look to the future and become a stronger, more successful race.
