5) did you know that the first blacks arrived in america not as slaves, but that virginia developed laws dehumanizing blacks as property as the need for labor to grow tobacco increased when they could not get labor from england?

It is late summer. Out of a violent storm appears a Dutch ship. The ship's cargo hold is empty except for twenty or so Africans whom the captain and his crew have recently robbed from a Spanish ship. The captain exchanges the Africans for food, then sets sail.

It's not clear if the Africans are considered slaves or indentured servants. (An indentured servant would be required to work a set amount of time, then granted freedom.) Records of 1623 and 1624 list them as servants, and indeed later records show increasing numbers of free blacks, some of whom were assigned land. On the other hand, records from gatherings do not indicate the marital status of the Africans (Mr., Miss, etc.) and, unlike white servants, no year is associated with the names -- information vital in determining the end of a servant's term of bondage. Most likely some Africans were slaves and some were servants. At any rate, the status of people in bondage was very confusing, even to those who were living at the time.

Whatever the status of these first Africans to arrive at Jamestown, it is clear that by 1640, at least one African had been declared a slave. This African was ordered by the court "to serve his said master or his assigns for the time of his natural life here or elsewhere."

The grounds for this harsh sentence presumabley lay in the fact that he was non-Christian rather than in the fact that he was physically dark. But religious beliefs could change, while skin color could not. Within a generation race, not religion, was being made the defining characteristic of enslaved Virginians, The terrible transformation to racial slavery was underway.

People have to get over the whole thing and move on with their lives. This type of subject matter is living in the ancient past. Everybody looks for a scape goat. If you look around the world, it's not like that. I am an black, colored, gig-a-boo, monkey, african-american woman, gal, *itch, etc. or what have you. And I am presently dating a white, polish, hungrian, anglo-saxon, ol' fay, cracker, causian american.
I was raised in a city in California were everyone saw no colored lines after some years, when people actually came to their senses. I was removed out of a mixed, inter-racial, non disriminating school, just to be bused to a school in our district that was made up of rich, wealthy, chinese, korean, italian, german, prodominately white people. I too had to walk to school 5 miles fom home and I was only 7 or 8 yrs. old. I sat and watched other kids that lived in my neighborhood who got rides to school and home..and they were my color, my neighbors, my friends that lived next door, kids that my momma fed when their parents, single mothers, and drugged out daddy's wasn't handling home.
Yes, everyone is entitled to their own opinions on "why do white people pretend to like blacks when they really hate them?" Some people would call me a sell out, traitor, high yelo heffa, or a jungle fever patient. Oh, the f**k well. IN every decade we all experience ignorance (prejudicy, racism, white power{kkk}, niggerism(look it up). If my momma, grandparents, or my oldest elders that has experienced hatred and predjudicy were to see this question..they will totally be down for your thoughts. But me, I would wonder what color you are and are you comforable with yourself.
Everyone would like to make this a black and white issue, and your doing a good job..by the way. But to degrade each others race, creed, orgin, sex, and somtimes your minds is remarkable. I learned long ago that race has no bearing on yourselves, as long you do or don't allow it. White people don't pretend to like blacks, it's distilled in them to hate us. Why? because of their ancestors. It's passed on through the genes and minds of their elders. Maybe it's because we taught them how to seasoned their food to cook, breastfeed and take of their kids, how to be good lovers( Masta was in all the headquarters), do their hair, clean their houses, fetch their animals, care for them, better then they would care for themselves, they resent us for being what they are not?
My boyfriend's parents which I call "plantation predjudice" have no idea that he is with a black woman. If they knew, he would be disowned, shunned, and exiled from their family name. He knows and met my family, friends, and others..maybe because we are more accepting and his parents are polish and hungarian. Maybe my family, friends, and others were pretending to like him when they really hated him? who knows.
Basically, we as people; human beings have different values and views on what is and what has yet to come. I love all races and feel that their is no superior race. No one is all white and no one is all black. We are singled out because of our beliefs and what we were taught to know about each other. "love thy neighbor as thy self".
Have you actually asked yourself these questions that you brought to the table and what was your answers that you came up with? White, black, mexican, asian, etc. descedants could fom their own questions based on yours, but you still wouldn't be satisfied, because it's not what you are looking for. Of course, no one will go into depth of those questions, just like no one will go into depth on religion..it's a subject that causes controversy and brings out self-hate towards yourself and others. It really is a dumb question to talk about race since there is only one "race" of humans - homosapiens. We call it racial differences because we always have to label something we don't understand. Now, if there were Romulans here, we could talk about another race.

Depending where you live you will see intollerance towards different races of people because it was passed down from generation to generation. There are just as many prejudices from black people towards white people. There is no way to undo all the savagery of the past towards different races of people. All we can do is show through the power of example that we all can live together in peace and be peaceful with one another and treat everyone as equals. That goes for all the different races of the world. Not just white verses black. Your questions are load with racial intollerances. It is these type of questions that keep the discrimantion, intolerances and the damage of the past going on and on and on. Our world isn't perfect, we can only do the best we can for all people and hope that the people in power will stop the wrongs from continuing

Some black ppl are cool others aren't but the same is for all races. We are afraid of the stereo type that is out there about each race. Yes we are sorry for slavery but back in the 1800's in the north east irish ppl were also slaves and during ww2 japanese were put into "camps" cuz we were afraid of each other.

The rich white CEO ppl don't care about black poor ppl but they don't care about white poor ppl either so I would say the new racism is now against poor ppl.

Yes 'I think the should be something for decendents of slaves as long as there is proof of it. But I think it should be something like free college with free room and board so we can make sure after the reperartion has ran out that they have a chance to get out of the crime ridden areas and raise failies and start a new stereo type for black ppl. And do all that so they have no excuse live in such horrible conditions.
