Why don't people realize that our American Culture is what makes us so Violent?

Postby ring » Tue Jul 24, 2012 11:46 pm

The reason that our gun crime is significantly higher than any other developed country isn't because of gun control, it's because of our violent culture that we revere.

Canada has very lenient gun control laws, but their culture being much more peaceful is why they have MUCH less gun-crimes per year than we do.

Canada isn't a warmongering obsessed country that invests more in bombing countries in the Middle East instead of investing in our children's education. They also don't have news media that thrive off fearing mongering and making the general public scared all the time. They don't put non-violent drug offenders in prison, which makes them come out more violent.

Our culture is what made us this way. If you ban guns, criminals will find a way to get to them. The only key against violence and ignorance is education.

FACT: America has 20 times more gun homicides than the other G20 countries.

Gun control does stop guns getting into too many unknown variable's hands, but, if someone is intent on getting a gun, then they will get one, legally or illegally.

It's human nature, not American culture. Look at the history of the world and it has been dominated by violence. What's going on right now is nothing compared to what has happened throughout human history.

Yes, I do realize that. Video games, movies, television, the media, and music all contribute to the violent culture.

"Laws that forbid the carrying of arms… disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes… Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man." - Thomas Jefferson

So what, you think gun control will help? You just proved that gun control won't help because you said it's our "culture" not access to guns that makes us violent. Was that the point you were trying to make, because that's what you just did.

Edit: I honestly don't know why you're preaching this on this website, go tell people who can change things. I'm not saying your points are wrong, but it helps when you provide links that support your argument.

It's not education in the general sense that will help stop gun murders, it's education about how to properly use a firearm that will make a difference. Although I do agree with you that news station overplay things in order to pander to and increase their viewership.

Also, I apologize for misunderstanding your question. I'm running on a little sleep and a lot of work.

People tend to live in self-denial and ignore aspects of themselves they would consider negative.

Exactly. Marx and Ernesto Guevara wrote about the connection between culture and the mode of production, but I digress. We need to build a society where greed and selfish behavior are not encouraged or rewarded.
