Why is a NY School Superintendent making $500K plus?

Who says government workers are not overpaid?

Carole Hankin -- who oversees 6,687 kids in 10 schools -- is the highest-paid in the state with $506,322 in total compensation. She collects a $386,868 salary, $67,454 in fringe benefits and $52,000 in retirement funds and expenses including use of a "late model car," plus gas.

Why is a NY School Superintendent making $500K plus?

Her $386k salary is about $186K to high for that position and location (she could commute to work if she wanted to..no need to live in the upper scale neighborhood yourself). You would be hard pressed to find anyone that runs a Federal Agency (outside the President / VP) that makes over $200K a year in salary so I'm not sure why a City employee would get paid that much (even if they are a professional who runs 10 schools).

Benefits don't sound to far apart compared to what other PROFESSIONAL employees get. Even non-professional employees cost private companies $30 - $50K a year (and part of her benefits would be matching pay on her 401K and if she was paid less her benefits would be less).

That is well and good that she makes that good, BUT when the government charges me as much for gas, food, insurance, and necessities of life based on the salaries of Politicians, wealthy, We suffer, They seem to have the attitude we can afford it, even if all that we gross per year is around 65,000.

Right, but its okay for some bank CEO whose company took billions in government funds because they were going to collapse, to pay his employees and himself millions in bonuses.

But the high level public servant who gets a fairly high salary is villified. Really?

You'll have to do better than that. Once bank CEO's compensation gets brought down to a reasonable level THEN we can talk about doing the same with public employees.

A. one worker is not all gov. worker... clearly this is the highest paid one you can find...

B. er... I just glanced at the article... apparently it's in one of the fanciest areas in the state and the nation...

very high property cost/cost of living...

basically, the same reason that you say people in Manhattan aren't rich when they make $250k... is the same reason she may not be overpaid...

What do you think she should be paid?

You're probably from some little podunk town in Kansas or somewhere like that. To someone like you, $500,000 is all the money in the world. Keep in mind that in the big city, especially one like New York, one of most expensive places in the United States to live, $500,000 doesn't go as far.

Conservatives...

These glutton and wealthy fiends who have much so to gain would be repulsive at the thought of giving even the smallest portion to those who have not for what we call this American Dream.

I have seen those who wish to conserve their riches not thinking of those who lay their heads on the cold ground as their only condolence, and I say that it is my knowing and that it is my hope that you are not in allignment with those wretched who who assert themselves high but take breath and step without human hearts...

I'll take you seriously when you acknowledge that it is immoral for the head of a company to make 30 million a year, while pulling the rug out from under his workers to hire a slave in Beijing for 25 cents an hour.

Until then - that's the contract this person negotiated. And we all know how you guys feel about contracts.

That is a lot of money but look at it this way, she is a white woman overseeing schools in the city. What is there a lot of in NYC? Blacks. She as a white woman is in harms way around black males, so it's kind of like combat pay.
