Will getting a settlement affect my financial aid eligibility?

Postby adin55 » Tue Jul 10, 2012 1:36 am

Both my parents are on SSDI, Section-8 Housing, and Food Stamps.
Household of 3 live on less than 20K a year.
I have an EFC of 0, I'm approved for Pell Grant, Cal Grant B, & BOGW.

HOWEVER, My mother had total hip reconstructive surgery & was given the recalled DePuy Hip Replacement. She had to have it redone after a series of serious complications. We are now in a class action lawsuit.

Will whatever money we earn from this settlement affect our income & therefore affect my eligibility for financial aid?

Depends on how the settlement moneys are treated for tax purposes, as FAFSA depends on your taxes.

Class actions usually don't pay much (if anything) so it's unlikely to make a significant difference.

You do realize that participating in class action lawsuits results in lawyers getting rich, and the actual people participating getting next to nothing, right?
