Will my parents find out about my speeding ticket?

Postby dacy17 » Fri Nov 18, 2011 6:27 pm

Here's the situation- I just got pulled over on the highway for going 19 miles above the speed limit in a 65 mph zone (though in my defense, I thought it was a 70 mph zone, plus I was trying to keep myself at 80 but the road started going downhill and I forgot to reduce my speed).

I'm 18 right now, though my license is from when I was 16 and hasn't been renewed so I think it's still an intermediate license (you can get a regular license when you're 18 but I think it has to be 2 years after you got your first one, and it hasn't been 2 years for me yet).

Here's what I'm most worried about- I was driving my mom's car and the car's covered by my parents' insurance. The officer asked me who's car it was and I told him it was my mom's, and then he asked me for my mom's first name. At first I thought that maybe they call your parents or the owner of the car but my mom hasn't said anything about it to me so I don't think they do. But maybe the police or the insurance company send the owner of the car a letter?

Anyway, I have enough money to pay the fine myself, so I think I'd rather do that then have my parents pay for it or at least part of it and be punished. So tell me, legal experts- can I get out of this one without my parents ever knowing, or at least not knowing until they get their insurance bills?

You're 18, which makes you an adult. Start acting like one, take responsibility and tell your parents.

Gee, if I didn't want to be grounded for the summer, I guess my choice would be not to speed. And even if it was a 70 zone, you were doing 84. I'd also suggest you read the rules about insulting others, and perhaps remove your comments before some decides to report them.

They will definately find out. Her insurance is going to go up. Tell her now, because they are going to find out anyway, if they don't already know.

Insurance will notify them. Better if you tell them first.

You want them to trust you after all. If you hide it, they'll know they can't trust you to be honest with them.
