1tb external hard drive problem?

Postby varik » Wed Apr 25, 2012 6:01 am

i have an external hard drive which i use to backup data. i.e. music, movies, pictures etc.

i have just purchased an imac and when the hard drive is plugged into the imac one folder shows up as locked. this means i cannot add new files or delete old files.

i plugged the same drive into my laptop running vista and i can make changes, however when i right click the folder in question and click properties it shows read only. i have un-ticked the read only part and applied changes but it still wont work on my mac.
any help is appreciated.

Have you checked the file system for the external drive? Mac might have issues accessing an NTFS drive. Also, have you tried accessing those files from another PC? They may be set to only allow user access from the account that created them. If you right click and go to properties, and check the security tab, you may be able to change it to be allowed by all users.

If it IS the filesystem, try exFat. it should be editable by both Mac and PC
