Hello I am foreign student and I got a speeding ticket today. I was going at a speed of 76 in a 55. I have a court date for January 23. I was driving under my International driver license. This international license states that it allows me to drive in United States. The policeman didn't let me drive back home because I didn't have a NC driver license. I am not sure why this happen, I have many friends who use their international driver license and they have been stop by the police before and they didn't have any problems.
I used to have an NC driver license but it expired on July. I went home (Argentina) to renew my student visa and once I was there I decided to get my International Driver license. I haven't renew my NC driver license because I thought it was not mandatory.
On june I had also a speeding ticket for going 20 over the limit. Since I never had a ticket before I believe they used what is called a prayer for forgiveness. So I believe I didn't get any points.
I also have a California driver license that I got during 3 months of holidays while I was living there for a summer break. Now I have my international driver license and my california driver license.
In conclusion, I am not sure how should I proceed. Can I use my CA driver license or I need to get my NC driver license? What should I do about my new speeding ticket? What are the laws concerning international driver license? Is it true that I cant use a international driver license? It seem to me that the policeman didn't know too much but I don't either what exactly are the rules. Also for my insurance, since is under my California driver license the points I get on my NC driver license will affect my insurance. (would it go up?)
I would really appreciate some guidance on how to proceed. Thank you for your time!
